About

We launched the Virtual Farmers Market to meet the community's need for access to fresh food and our farmers' need for economic support during the current COVID-19 crisis. ​

We remain committed to food justice and the health and well-being of our community. As such, we are offering financial assistance to make the Virtual Farmers Market affordable to all. And we deliver food to all of Berkshire County to help keep our community safe during this pandemic. 

 

The Virtual Farmers Market is made possible by emergency funds provided by Berkshire United Way, Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, Berkshire Agricultural Ventures, and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, and in-kind support from Barrington Stage Company.

We are working every day to increase the scale of our Virtual Farmers Market and serve more of our community. We have a small team and we regret that we can not fully meet the immense need for access to fresh, local food. We are happy to connect shoppers with other opportunities to buy food from their local farmers.

FAQs

Who is this Virtual Farmers Market for? 

 

  • This market is for the entire Berkshire community. We provide extra support for those who are low-income or at high risk for the virus. Please see below for more information. 

 

Can I order online using my SNAP card?

 

  • The answer is not yet. Currently SNAP sales can only be made in person, not online or over the phone. We are currently advocating through our legislators to change those regulations during this emergency period. 

 

Can I make an order using my SNAP card in person? 

 

  • Due to the social distancing protocols necessary during the pandemic, we will not be able to process any in-person orders. This decision was made to protect the safety of our staff, volunteers and shoppers.

 

What financial assistance are you offering instead of matching my SNAP funds (aka "Market Match")?

 

  • While we continue to advocate for allowing SNAP sales online, we will also be offering a $30 discount to 50 shoppers per week who are either SNAP recipients OR suffering from economic hardship due to the pandemic. 

 

How can I access this discount?

 

  • We are using a lottery system each week to fairly give access to this discount. You can read more about our financial assistance process and enter the weekly lottery here

 

Can I use my Healthy Incentive Program (HIP) funds at the Virtual Farmers Market? 

 

  • Unfortunately, no. HIP funds need to be processed in person and directly by the vendors who are authorized to accept HIP. 

 

How will I get the food that I ordered? 

 

  • The Virtual Farmers Market will deliver the food to your doorstep! We will be working with staff and community volunteers to drop off your order. If you are ordering frozen food or other items that you'd like to keep cool, please leave a cooler outside your door. 

 

How much does the delivery cost? 

 

  • Delivery is FREE for the following individuals:

    • SNAP recipients

    • Those who have lost their jobs or are suffering economic hardship due to the pandemic

    • Seniors

    • Others who are at high risk for this virus due to health conditions

  • Delivery for all other community members is $5. This will help us cover the costs of running this service.

  • Please choose the appropriate delivery option upon checkout. We are using the honor system and appreciate your honesty!

How do I know that my order has been successfully placed? 

  • You will receive an emailed receipt if your order has gone through. If you did not receive an emailed receipt, then your order has NOT been processed. Please go back and make sure your checkout is complete. If you still cannot place your order, please email our Program Coordinator at grace@rootsrising.org.

What safety protocols are you implementing? 

 

  • All participating vendors will need to comply with the MDAR's COVID-19 guidelines for farmers in order to participate. In addition, we will be working with a very small team to package the orders, and this team will be complying with all of the CDC's recommendations for hygiene and social distancing. Our delivery service will be strictly no-contact: all orders will be dropped on your doorstep. There will be nothing to sign or process upon delivery.
